[resolved] YouTube doesn’t embed?

James_B

Thanks to @Grif and meta.discourse for helping us get YouTube embeds figured out!

Just place your YouTube link on a line by itself using a simple link like these two examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLACEsimpleVIDEOidHERE

or

http://youtu.be/PLACEsimpleVIDEOidHERE

Note that my links involve the simple /watch?v= string or the simple youtu.be/ string. Anything different might mess it up, and anything added like a special URL (t=300s, etc) may or may not mess it up.

Some tips to get it working right:

  • YouTube links that have special purposes might not work, like an /embed/ link.
  • Special YouTube links like ...t=300s to start at 300 seconds might not work.
  • Make sure nothing else is on the same line as your YouTube link.
  • You will know it is working when the video pops up in your preview window.
  • For a quick way to get a YouTube video's link that is Discourse-compatible, click the Share tab on the YouTube video and take the simple youtu.be/ link.
  • Some videos may not work if embedding is disabled.

Also, keep in mind that different YouTube videos have different licenses.

Hi @James_B. I think this is addressed here:

@Grif

Thanks! I edited my post with instructions on how to embed YouTube and page previews. I must have accidentally formatted my original YouTube link wrong by adding something to it or not having it on a line by itself. I remember now that we could easily do this on the LCL Google Community. I have to say I am liking Discourse's version of URL previews.
